Halal Food in Perth: 14 Cafes & Restaurants For Muslim Travelers

Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, holds a special place in my heart. As someone who has had the privilege of studying in this charming city, I’m really biased when it comes to Perth. While it may not always be the first destination that comes to mind for travelers visiting Australia, I've definitely come to appreciate its unique blend of food, culture and beautiful landscapes. Perth is definitely a stress-free city with lots of hidden gems that you should at least visit once in your life.

When I first came to Perth, I brought tons of instant noodles because I was so afraid that it would be hard to find halal food. I was stopped a the airport immigrations office for bringing in imported food items and as it turns out, finding halal or Muslim-friendly food here is much easier than I expected it to be. In this guide, I invite you to discover the many reasons why Perth deserves a spot on your travel itinerary and we'll take you on a tasty journey through Perth's halal food scene.

Is it easy to find halal food in Australia?

Australia is a fantastic place for halal food lovers and Perth is no different. According to the 2016 Australian Census, there were approximately 41,000 Muslims living in Perth, which accounts for around 2.4% of the city's population. Perth is known for being family-friendly, and for being welcoming to Muslim travelers by offering a diverse range of halal food options. You'll find a wide variety of halal dishes reflecting Perth's multicultural population. Whether you prefer bustling food markets or cozy eateries, Perth has something to satisfy every craving.

How to Identify Halal Certification in Australia?

Before you start enjoying the delicious halal food in Perth, it's important to know how to recognise genuine halal certification in Australia.

Here's a simple guide to help you with this:

1. Look for the Halal Logo:

Authentic halal-certified products and restaurants will have a special halal logo. In Australia, you'll often see the "Halal Certified" logo from trusted certifying bodies. When you’re at supermarkets like Coles or Woolworths, there might also be Halal items that were imported from other countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia or Korea too, so just check the products when purchasing and you’ll be fine.

2. Check the certificate and certifying body:

Take a moment to check the name and details of the certifying body on the official certificate displayed in their establishment. Within Australia there are a number of Halal Organisations that are authorised to issue Halal certificates, so don’t be shocked if the certificate looks different at different restaurants. Some examples are the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) or Western Australia Halal Authority (WAHA), but there are definitely more that can certify an eatery.

3. Ask the staff and clarify:

Don't hesitate to have a friendly chat with the restaurant staff. Some places may not have official halal certification but could still offer halal options or use halal certified poultry. They might be run by Muslims (Muslim-owned establishment) or source their ingredients from halal suppliers. The staff can provide helpful information about their halal practices.

Disclaimer: While we aim to be a reliable source of information, the halal certification and menus of places can change over time. It's essential to be cautious and verify the halal status of each restaurant before dining. It’s a good idea to double-check directly with the restaurant, especially if you have any doubts. If you're unsure, consider exploring other halal eateries to ensure a worry-free dining experience.

Now that you know how to identify halal certification, let's explore where you can find halal food in Perth.
